	Regehr left the team before its season-opening game in Vancouver on Thursday night after his wife went into labor back in Calgary. Regehr and his wife, Christina, are expecting their first child. Regehr, who was third among Flames defensemen with five goals, 20 points and a plus-11 rating last season, is expected to rejoin the team for the rematch with the Canucks on Saturday night in Calgary.

	The Coyotes traded Zigomanis to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday for future considerations. Zigomanis, a second-round draft pick of Carolina in 2001, has 19 goals and 14 assists in 167 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, Coyotes and St. Louis Blues. The 27-year-old Zigomanis had 14 goals and nine assists in 75 games for the Coyotes in 2006-07, but had just two goals and one assist in 33 games last season. He was placed on waivers last week, went unclaimed and was assigned to San Antonio in the AHL.

	Sykora isn't expected to play in Saturday's home opener against New Jersey, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I don't think he's gonna play Saturday," Penguins coach Michel Therrien said. Sykora missed the Penguins' first two games in Sweden with a groin injury. The right wing had 28 goals and 35 assists for 63 points in 81 games for the Penguins last season.

	Jones may need surgery on a labrum in his hip, according to the Flyers' official Web site. If Jones opts for surgery, his recovery time would be approximately six-to-eight weeks. "This is very disappointing. I was really looking forward to this camp and the start of the season and getting off to a good start," Jones said. "It's a little setback, but I'll hopefully get this fixed and come back healthier than before." The defenseman had five goals and 26 assists for a career-best 31 points in 71 games for the Flyers last season.

	The Sharks released Friesen from a tryout contract Thursday, ending the veteran forward's comeback bid a few hours before the club's season opener against Anaheim. Friesen was given a chance during training camp to return to the Sharks. The popular 32-year-old Friesen played for the Sharks from 1994 until 2001 and was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in a deal for Teemu Selanne. He was still with the Sharks when they trimmed their roster to 23 players earlier this week, but the club apparently didn't think Friesen was ready for consistent playing time at the expense of its younger players.

	The Blue Jackets placed Malhotra on injured reserve and recalled right wing Derek Dorsett from their American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse. Malhotra was put on injured reserve Thursday retroactive to Oct. 5 with what the team termed a "lower body" injury. The center had 11 goals and 18 assists last season, but was limited to 71 games because of knee injuries.

	After undergoing surgery to remove torn cartilage from his left knee last month, Brind'Amour is listed as day-to-day for the Rangers' season opener on Friday. Brind'Amour had this procedure on Sept. 30 on the same knee that required reconstructive surgery in February after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that sidelined him for the final 22 games of last season. He practiced with the team shortly after his latest operation, and was expected to be ready for the start of the regular season. It is unclear when he'll be back with the team.

	Niittymaki made 28 saves for the Phantoms of the AHL in their 4-2 win over the Flyers, and it appears he'll be ready to start the season. Niittymaki, recovering from hip surgery, is expected to be Martin Biron's backup with the Flyers. The goaltender went 12-9-2 with a 2.91 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage in 28 appearances last season.

	Zidlicky was one of eight defensemen to make the cut for the Wild's roster, but he is not expected to play in Saturday's season opener due to a sprained ankle. Zidlicky was a sixth-round pick for the New York Rangers in 2001, but spent the last four seasons with Nashville. He had five goals and 38 assists in 79 games for the Predators in 2007-08 before he was traded to Minnesota in July.

	On Wednesday, the Sharks re-signed Semenov and left wing Tomas Plihal to one-year contracts. Semenov had four points in 22 games as a depth defenseman last year, while Plihal has scored three points in 25 games with the Sharks over the past two seasons.

	Mason was placed on the injured reserve on Wednesday, and is expected to miss at least four more weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. The 20-year-old Mason was the Blue Jackets' second pick and No. 69 overall in the 2006 draft and is considered the franchise's goalie of the future. He was injured last spring while playing in the Ontario Hockey League, where he went 32-7-3 with a 2.51 goals-against average and three shutouts in 42 games.

	Hinote is listed day-to-day with a deep thigh laceration, but is close to being at full strength, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. It is possible Hinote could be available Friday, when the Blues open their season at home against Nashville. The right wing had five goals and five assists in 58 games in 2007-08, when he missed 16 games with a hip injury.

	The Sabres placed Gaustad on injured reserve on Sept. 29 after undergoing surgery for a torn ligament in his right thumb. Gaustad was hurt during a fight in a shootout loss against on Sept. 28, and had the operation two days later. He was expected to miss between three to four weeks, but he told the the Buffalo News he could miss at least six. Gaustad had 10 goals and 36 points - both career highs - in 82 games last season.

	The Flames placed Warrener on the injured reserve on Wednesday with a shoulder injury. Warrener had been placed on waivers Tuesday to get the Flames below the salary cap. A veteran defenseman and regular in the Flames' lineup the last four seasons, Warrener had a goal and three assists in 31 games for Calgary in 2007-08.

	San Jose assigned Brad Staubitz and forward Riley Armstrong to the team's minor-league affiliate in Worcester on Wednesday after they cleared waivers. Staubitz, who signed with the Sharks as a free agent in September 2005, spent all of last season in Worcester. He has yet to make his NHL debut.
