	Wild president and general manager Doug Risebrough and assistant GM for hockey operations Tom Lynn traveled to Gaborik's home in Trencin, Slovakia, last week as a starting point for the negotiating process on a contract extension. Gaborik had career highs in goals (42) and points (83) in 77 games for the Wild in 2007-08, but finished with just one assist in six playoff contests. Risebrough and Lynn shared inside information about their philosophy and plans, used statistics to sell Gaborik on how he fits in Minnesota's system, and took time to answer his questions about the team's strategy and direction. "He's going to make a decision, and we want him to make that decision with all the information that's out there and not base it on any misconceptions or myths," Lynn said Monday.

	Whitney underwent surgery on Friday to correct a chronic foot problem, and is expected to miss three to five months. The team didn't describe the nature of the problem in a statement released Saturday. Whitney told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review his left foot is misaligned and that attempts to correct it with orthopedic inserts in his skates didn't work. "We've tried everything to avoid surgery because we knew it would mean missing a chunk of the season, but nothing worked," he told the newspaper. The defenseman enters the second year of a $24 million, six-year deal after totaling 12 goals and 28 assists in 76 regular-season games in 2007-08.

	The Predators are hoping that the situation involving Radulov and the Russian club Salavat Yulaev Ufa will be resolved by the end of the week, according to the The Tennessean. Nashville is hoping the International Ice Hockey Federation, along with the support of the NHL, can put pressure on the Russian Continental Hockey League to void the right wing's contract with the Russian team. If Radulov is held to the deal with Salavat Yulaev Ufa, the Predators would be left with a big hole that could be filled by jumping back into the free-agent market, making a trade or allowing the prospects to pick up the slack.

	Sakic said he hopes to have a decision on whether or not he would return for next season "in the next couple of weeks," according to the Rocky Mountain News. Sakic, who missed 38 games after hernia surgery last season, said he doesn't want his decision to linger. "I should make my final decision pretty soon," he told the newspaper. "Whatever that is, I want to make sure it's 100 percent sure." Sakic had 13 goals and 27 assists in 44 games for the Avalanche last season. The Avalanche report for physicals Sept. 19 with training camp set to start the next day.

	The Kings agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract with Doughty, the second overall pick in the 2008 draft. The 18-year-old Doughty had 13 goals and 37 assists in 58 regular-season games for Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League last season. The 6-foot, 219-pounder had three goals and six assists in 10 playoff games. Doughty was one of four draft-eligible players to help Team Canada win a gold medal at the world junior championships this year. He was chosen as the top defenseman of the tournament after recording four assists in seven games.

	In an interview with ESPN.com, Emery said he was seeking professional therapy as he works to get his career back on track, according to the Ottawa Citizen. He spoke to the Web site during a break from training camp in Finland, where he was practicing with his new team, Atlant Mytischchi of Russia's Continental Hockey League. Emery admitted during the interview that he was also cutting ties with some of the questionable characters in his life earlier this season. The controversial goaltender was often at odds with the Senators' organization last season for his repeated antics, but he seems to be taking responsibility for his past mistakes instead of denying his troubles. Emery said part of his problem was that he was caught up in a cult of his own personality.

	It's unlikely the Predators will re-sign Gelinas, according to the Tennessean. Predators general manager David Poile said Tuesday that he hadn't ruled out signing Gelinas, but said he didn't see a spot for him now. "I wish we had a position for him because he's good as a fourth-line guy, with penalty-killing and leadership," Poile said. "But right now we have those guys. You never say never, but it's a long shot." Gelinas finished with nine goals and 11 assists in 57 games in 2007-08, but underwent season-ending to repair a torn ACL.

	Hlavac passed up on a deal to remain with the Predators, instead signing with Linkoping of the Swedish elite league, according to The Tennessean. Hlavac's agent Ritchie Winter said the Predators made him a one-year offer, but for less money than what the veteran left wing had hoped for after totaling 13 points in 18 games with Nashville after coming over from Tampa Bay at the trade deadline. Winter said Hlavac was looking for a contract in the neighborhood of $1 million.

	Maple Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher told the National Post that McCabe has "softened his stance" on waiving his no-trade clause. There are six weeks left until training camps open, and the Maple Leafs are waiting for McCabe to provide them with a list of teams he would be willing to play for next season. Fletcher suggested that a trade would benefit both the Maple Leafs and McCabe, who is coming off a sub-par season. In 2007-08, the defenseman totaled 21 points in 41 games, as he missed time with a broken hand.

	Ryan, who was an unrestricted free agent, signed with the Minsk Dynamo of Russia's new Continental Hockey League, according to the Buffalo News. Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said the Sabres had consulted with Ryan about a two-way contract so that he could be sent to Portland of the AHL, but Ryan decided to pursue other options. Ryan had four goals and eight points in 46 games for the Sabres in 2007-08.

	Florida general manager Jacques Martin said he doesn't expect Kilger to play for the Panthers this season, according to the Miami Herald. Shortly after the Panthers obtained Kilger from Toronto for a third-round draft pick at the trade deadline, Kilger was granted a leave of absence. The Panthers later suspended him from without pay after failing to join the team. "He's still dealing with some personal issues, and at this point, I don't think he'll be playing," Martin said. Kilger, who also took a leave of absence with the Maple Leafs last season, had 17 points in 53 games in 2007-08.

	Wild general manager Doug Risebrough will fly into Slovakia over the weekend to scout a tournament, but also expects to make a stop in Gaborik's hometown, according to the Minnesota Star-Tribune. Gaborik had career highs in goals (42) and points (83) in 77 games for the Wild in 2007-08, but finished with just one assist in six playoff contests. Gaborik is a year from unrestricted free agency, and the Wild plan to offer Gaborik a groundbreaking extension to lock him up for the next four to seven years. Minnesota, though, had held off negotiations until Risebrough could meet with Gaborik face-to-face. Gaborik will make $7.5 million in the final year of his contract this season. The Wild, though, plan to make him an offer averaging in the $8.5 million cap-hit range.

	The Blackhawks signed Pelletier to a one-year contract Friday. The 25-year-old center came to the Blackhawks from the Boston Bruins in a July 24 trade for center Martin St. Pierre. Pelletier played in six games last season with Boston. He scored 71 goals in 206 regular-season games with Providence of the AHL between 2005-08.

	The Sabres re-signed Numminen on Friday after the defenseman missed all but one game last season following heart surgery. Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said the 40-year-old unrestricted free agent agreed to a one-year contract. The deal is worth $1.1 million. He was scheduled to make $2.6 million last season after signing a one-year deal, but missed 81 games recovering from September 2007 heart surgery. Numminen played for 16 minutes in Buffalo's regular-season finale against Boston. In three seasons with Buffalo, Numminen has scored 69 points in 155 regular-season games.

	Vermette signed a $5.25 million, two-year contract extension with the Ottawa Senators on Thursday after a season in which he had career highs in goals and points. He earned nearly $1.1 million last year. Vermette had 24 goals and 53 points while appearing in 81 games last season. He was among the league leaders with a 57 percent faceoff win rate. In 297 career games with Ottawa, Vermette has 71 goals and 139 points.

	The Predators announced Thursday that defenseman Ville Koistinen was awarded a one-year, $700,000 deal in arbitration. He was a restricted free agent this summer and filed for arbitration before the July 5 deadline. The 26-year-old had 17 points in 48 games in his first NHL season with Nashville last year.

	The Nashville Predators have signed center Jarred Smithson to a two-year, $1.4 million contract extension through 2011. The deal announced Thursday will pay the 29-year-old forward $725,000 in 2009-10 and $750,000 in 2010-11. Smithson, a free agent signed by Nashville in 2004, has 45 points in 241 games since making his NHL debut with Los Angeles in 2002.

	The Blue Jackets re-signed Leclaire, a restricted free agent, on Wednesday to a three-year contract through the 2010-11 season. Leclaire, 25, is coming off his best season, going 24-17-6 with a 2.25 goals-against average and nine shutouts in 54 games. He ranked second in shutouts and seventh in GAA. His record was the best in franchise history and his shutout total nearly doubled the previous club mark of five set by Marc Denis in 2002-03. After the season, Leclaire helped Canada win a silver medal at the world championships, going 4-0 with a 2.00 GAA and a shutout in four contests.

	The Wild bought out the remaining three years of Parrish's contract on Wednesday. The right wing, who scored 35 goals and had 34 assists with the Wild, is now a free agent. It was an abrupt end to a disappointing return home for the hard-nosed winger. Parrish starred at Bloomington Jefferson High School and St. Cloud State University before playing his first seven years in the NHL with Florida, the Islanders and Los Angeles. He signed a five-year deal worth more than $13 million to come home to the Wild in 2006. But he was bothered by injuries and never seem to fit in coach Jacques Lemaire's system in two years there.

	Filppula will be back with Detroit next season, signing a $15 million, five-year contract with the Red Wings on Wednesday that keeps him under contract through the 2012-13 season and avoids a salary arbitration hearing. Filppula, 24, had career highs with 19 goals and 36 points last season. Then, he played in all 22 playoff games and scored in the Stanley Cup-clinching win over the Pittsburgh Penguins last month. Detroit took the Finland native in the third round of the 2002 draft, and he has 29 goals and 54 points over two-plus seasons in the NHL.
