	Hafner may need right shoulder surgery after a disappointing end-of-the-season physical exam. Hafner spent more than three months on the disabled list with a strained shoulder. During his exit physical, team doctors found the strength did not return to levels that the club had hoped following the extended rehab, general manager Mark Shapiro said Tuesday. Hafner and the team are now examining "alternatives" including offseason arthroscopic surgery. Tests showed the left-handed power hitter had mysteriously lost nearly all the strength in his shoulder.

	Lowrie's two-out single in the ninth inning helped the defending World Series champions beat Los Angeles 3-2 Monday night to win their first-round playoff series in four games. Lowrie, who hit .258 with two homers and 46 RBIs during the regular season, is 4-for-11 (/364) with two runs scored in three postseason contests thus far.

The Red Sox advanced to an AL championshipe series matchup against Tampa Bay. Hunter batted .278 with 21 homers and 78 RBIs during the regular season - his first with Los Angeles after spending the last 11 years with Minnesota. He went 7-for-18 (.389) with five RBIs in the postseason.

	Sonnanstine gave up both runs and three hits over 5 2-3 innings of a 6-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday that clinched the Rays' first-round AL playoff series. Sonnanstine walked one and fanned four in his first career playoff start. He went 13-9 with a 4.38 ERA in 32 regular-season starts, but had gone 0-3 in seven outings since a win over the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 18.

	Pena went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a 6-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday that clinched the Rays' first-round AL playoff series. Pena, who batted .247 with team highs in homers (31) and RBIs (102) in the regular season, has gone 5-for-10 in three playoff contests thus far.

	Marmol suffered minor injuries in a car accident early Tuesday in the Dominican Republic. A Cubs representative in the Dominican Republic, Jose Serra, said the Cubs reliever received seven stitches in his forehead but is otherwise healthy. A truck hit a car carrying Marmol, a cousin and a friend in his hometown of Bonao near 2 a.m. The All-Star right-hander had just arrived in the Caribbean nation after the Cubs were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs. Marmol said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the air bag deployed and he only suffered a cut and an "inflammation" of his forehead. Marmol pitched in 82 games this season, going 2-4 with a 2.68 ERA.

	Rivera had surgery Tuesday on his right shoulder and is expected to resume throwing in three months, a month ahead of spring training. New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek performed the operation at the Hospital for Special Surgery, shaving a calcified joint on the top of Rivera's shoulder. The 38-year-old closer had 39 saves this year, and his 1.40 ERA was his best since 2005.

	Lester held the Angels to four hits in seven shutout innings in Game 4 of the ALDS on Monday, but but lost his chance at a second victory in the series when Los Angeles scored twice in the eighth to tie it 2-all. The Red Sox won 3-2 to advance to the ALCS. Lester figures to start Game 2 of the ALCS at Tampa Bay on Saturday. He's been outstanding so far in the playoffs, allowing one unearned run in 14 innings.

	The Red Sox have removed Lowell from their first-round postseason roster on because of a right hip strain. He would be ineligible to play in the AL championship series if the Red Sox advance past their first-round opponent, the Los Angeles Angels. The World Series MVP, who also has a torn labrum in his right hip, was replaced on the active roster by infielder Gil Velazquez, who made his major league debut on Sept. 25. Lowell was 0-for-8 in two games during the series against the Angels.

	Estes cleared outright waivers and chose to become a free agent. The 35-year-old Estes, who didn't pitch in the majors in 2007 while rehabbing from reconstructive elbow surgery, began the season at Triple-A Portland before his contract was purchased by the Padres on May 8. He was 2-3 with a 4.74 ERA in nine appearances, including eight starts. Estes was sidelined for more than two months with a broken left thumb.
