	Barrett, who missed 115 games because of injuries, has elected free agency after clearing outright waivers. Barrett missed the last three months of the season after fouling a ball off his face at Colorado on July 2. He also was on the DL from April 8-May 24 with a sprained right elbow.

	Gorzelanny was placed on the 60-day disabled list to make room for No. 1 draft pick Pedro Alvarez. Gorzelanny, who missed the last three weeks of the season with a finger injury, left his start against the Houston Astros in the third inning Wednesday night with an irritation in his finger. Gorzelanny went 6-9 with a 6.66 ERA in 21 starts.

	The Twins will keep Redmond for another season, paying him $950,000. The 37-year-old backup catcher hit .287 in 38 games this season, with 12 RBIs. He has a .292 career average. A leader in the clubhouse, Redmond played fewer games this season. He played in 82 games in 2007, 47 in 2006 and 45 in his first year with the team in 2005. Starter Joe Mauer stayed healthy this season and logged more time behind the plate.

	Burgos will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. The 24-year-old reliever told The Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety. Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison. He disappeared after the accident but turned himself in Tuesday. Prosecutor Raul Quiroz said an investigation could lead to additional charges.

	Matsuzaka will be on the mound for the Red Sox when the AL championship series begins Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays. Matsuzaka was 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA this season, best among the Boston starters in both categories. But he also led the rotation with 94 walks, raising his pitch count and limiting him to 167 2-3 innings.

	The Cubs picked up Harden's $7 million option for next year. The Cubs acquired the hard-throwing right-hander from Oakland on July 8. He was the losing pitcher in Game 3 of the NL playoffs on Saturday night as the Cubs were swept in three games by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26-year-old Harden went a combined 10-2 with a 2.07 ERA in 25 starts for the Athletics and Cubs this season. Harden, who has battled arm problems throughout his career, was 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA in 12 starts with the Cubs.

	The Rockies have bought out Herges' 2000 option. Perhaps his 5.04 ERA had something to do with this? At 38 years old, his career may be over, but we've seen too many teams pay older relievers big money to just assume so.

	Blake will be a free agent at the end of the season. As they enter the NLCS, it's not like re-signing Blake is a serious priority for the Dodgers right now. However, he did play well for them after coming over from Cleveland, so expect Los Angeles to at least discuss some options with him.

	Rodriguez apparently wants a 5 year/$75 million contract, which the Angels won't meet. If so, the man who just set the major league record for saves in a season will be in another uniform next season. There should be quite the bidding war for K-Rod's services, depending on who needs a closer and who wants to pay for the best available.

	Vizquel, the 11-time Gold Glove shortstop who will be looking for work this winter, is recovering from laser surgery on his right eye. "All went well,'' Vizquel said in an e-mail. Vizquel got a late start to the year after needing arthroscopic left knee surgery during spring training. He was limited to 92 games - his fewest since playing 64 in 2003 for the Cleveland Indians, the second-to-last year of his 11-season tenure there. Vizquel batted .222 with 23 RBIs, 10 doubles and a triple in 2008.

	Burgos turned himself in Tuesday night, a week after police say he was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. The news comes after the mother of one of the two victims accused Burgos of intentionally running her daughter over because she refused to go out with him. Burgos has not appeared in the major leagues since last year and spent the past season on the disabled list following elbow ligament replacement surgery. He pitched in the minors last month while on a rehabilitation assignment.

	Rodriguez has made it clear that the Angels will be his first option when it comes to signing with a team this offseason. Mark Texiera, meanwhile, sounds like he'll look elsewhere.

	Griffey is not ready to retire. The surefire Hall-of-Famer wants the White Sox to resign him, so we'll see what the team decides during the offseason. If nothing else, I'm sure Griffey is welcome somewhere, if only to boost ticket sales.

	Mussina is mulling over whether he'll pitch in the majors next season, or if he's going to retire. He's coming off his first 20-win season, in which he turned out to be the Yankees' best starting pitcher.

	Hafner may need right shoulder surgery after a disappointing end-of-the-season physical exam. Hafner spent more than three months on the disabled list with a strained shoulder. During his exit physical, team doctors found the strength did not return to levels that the club had hoped following the extended rehab, general manager Mark Shapiro said Tuesday. Hafner and the team are now examining "alternatives" including offseason arthroscopic surgery. Tests showed the left-handed power hitter had mysteriously lost nearly all the strength in his shoulder.

	Lowrie's two-out single in the ninth inning helped the defending World Series champions beat Los Angeles 3-2 Monday night to win their first-round playoff series in four games. Lowrie, who hit .258 with two homers and 46 RBIs during the regular season, is 4-for-11 (/364) with two runs scored in three postseason contests thus far.

	Hunter drove in two runs in the eighth inning to pull the the Angels into a tie, but his team couldn't hold on and fell 3-2 at Boston on Monday. The Red Sox advanced to an AL championshipe series matchup against Tampa Bay. Hunter batted .278 with 21 homers and 78 RBIs during the regular season - his first with Los Angeles after spending the last 11 years with Minnesota. He went 7-for-18 (.389) with five RBIs in the postseason.
