	Werth hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Tuesday. It was his only hit in four at-bats, but was clearly a big one as the Phillies continue to battle the Mets for NL East supremacy. Werth is hitting .264 with 17 homers and 45 RBIs in 97 games.

	Perez surrendered three runs in 6.1 innings against Atlanta on Tuesday. He gave up seven hits, walked five and struck out three. It counts as a quality start, his third in a row, but he clearly struggled with his command. Perez is 9-7 with a 3.93 ERA this season.

	Shields beat the best team in baseball on Tuesday, allowing two Angels runs on nine hits in eight innings. He walked one, struck out seven and gave up a home run to Vladimir Guerrero. Shields is 11-7 with a 3.68 ERA this season and is 2-0 in his last four outings.

	Burnett dominated the Yankees on Tuesday, yielding one run on five hits in eight innings. His offense backed him with just enough run support, taking the lead with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. He walked one and struck out a season high 13. He hasn't lost in his last six starts. His record goes to 16-9 and he lowered his ERA to 3.51.

	Santana had a strong outing against the Rays on Tuesday, allowing only one run on four hits in seven innings. Unfortunately, the Angels bullpen lost the lead and eventually lost the game, so Santana did not factor into the decision. He remains at 13-5 with a 3.39 ERA and has not received a decision in either of his last two starts.

	Hochevar left his start against the Cleveland Indians with an undisclosed injury while warming up for the sixth inning Tuesday night. The right-hander had allowed seven hits over five innings and the Royals were trailing 4-3 when he went to the mound to warm up. Hochevar threw a couple of pitches and assistant trainer Frank Kyte went to the mound to check on the 24-year-old. A moment later, they walked to the dugout.

He left with the Phillies down a run, but they later tied the game up to leave him with a no-decision. Blanton is 6-12 with a 4.50 ERA for Oakland and Philadelphia this season.

	Gordon is not in the Royals lineup for Tuesday's game against the Indians. He was feeling stiffness in his back and was receiving treatment for it, so expect him to return within the next day or two. Gordon is hitting .255 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs this season.

	Everett did not start Tuesday's game after he was hit on the right hand by a foul ball off the bat of teammate Nick Punto on Monday. X-rays showed that it was just a deep bruise and there were no broken bones, but manager Ron Gardenhire said Everett will be out for at least the next two games. Brendan Harris started at shortstop.

	The Padres activated Tomko from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Tomko takes the roster spot left by right-hander Greg Maddux, who was traded Tuesday to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two players to be named or cash. Tomko appeared in just two games for San Diego since he was signed as a free agent June 27, allowing one run on one hit in three innings of work. He was placed on the disabled list on July 8 with a strained right elbow. Tomko started the season with the Kansas City Royals, where he was 2-7 with a 6.97 ERA in 16 games and 10 starts before he was released June 21.

	Young sat out Tuesday's game with an injured ankle. Young injured his ankle while chasing down a double by Oakland's Jack Cust in the fourth inning on Monday night. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Young could be available in an emergency situation but he would prefer to give him the day off and see how he feels Wednesday. Jason Kubel started in Young's place in left field.

	Harang will not make his scheduled start on Thursday, due to neck spasms. Josh Fogg will start on Thursday, then Harang on Friday. Harang has been one of baseball's bigger disappointments this season, posting a 3-13 record and a 5.59 ERA.

	Kinsler might be able to avoid season-ending surgery for a sports hernia after receiving encouraging news from a specialist Tuesday. Kinsler was examined by Dr. John Preskitt at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. Kinsler said the doctor told him there was probably no torn muscle in the left side of his groin area. Kinsler was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday and will be examined again in a week. If he shows progress, there's a chance he could return to the lineup at the end of his DL stint.

	Carl Pavano may not be the front-runner to start for the New York Yankees on Saturday after all. According to a Yankees beat writer, Peter Abraham, from the Journal News, Pavano skipped a bullpen session today due to a stiff neck. 	The Braves recalled Reyes from Triple-A Richmond to start their game Tuesday against the New York Mets after placing reserve infielder Ruben Gotay on the 15-day disabled list. Reyes started Tuesday night against the New York Mets, hoping to end a career-worst five-game losing streak. He was 3-9 with a 5.33 ERA for Atlanta before being optioned July 28 to Richmond, where he had a 3.94 ERA in three starts without a decision.

	The Braves placed Gotay on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left hamstring. Gotay hurt his leg running out a double Saturday against San Francisco. He is hitting .225 with two homers and six RBIs in 89 at-bats.
