	On Thursday, the Angels recalled infielder Brandon Wood from AAA-Salt Lake. He hit 31 home runs in AAA this season, but don't expect that kind of power display in the majors this season. He's definitely a player to watch for next season, especially in keeper formats.

	Gonzalez struck out the side to record his 7th save of the season on Thursday. He hasn't gotten many chances since taking over as the Braves closer, but he's done a solid job when the Braves need him to preserve their lead at the end of games. He hasn't blown a save and has a total season ERA of 3.38.

	McCann went 1-3 with a three-run homer on Thursday, leading the Braves to a 4-2 win over the visiting Marlins. He's been the league's finest offensive catcher this season, hitting .292 with 22 home runs and 75 RBIs.

	The Athletics activated Sweeney from the 15-day disabled list and started him in right field against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night. Struggling outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento to make room for Sweeney. Sweeney had been out with a sprained right thumb since Aug. 13 and went hitless in a one-game rehab assignment before joining his teammates for the start of a four-game series against the Twins. He was also on the DL earlier this season with a bruised toe. He was hitting .287 with four homers and 37 RBIs in 88 games before he was hurt.

	Kendrick was placed on the DL again on Thursday. This time it's a left hamstring strain that landed him there, but it's expected to just be the 15-day variety. Kendrick has hit .308 with 3 home runs, 30 RBIs and 7 stolen bases in 86 games this season.

	Soriano had elbow surgery on Thursday. He's done three 15-day DL stints and only pitched 14 innings this season. He obviously won't pitch again this year, but is expected to be ready for 2009.

	Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday to make room for outfielder Ryan Sweeney, who was from the 15-day disabled list. Athletics manager Bob Geren did not say whether Oakland would recall Gonzalez when major league rosters are expanded on Sept. 1. Gonzalez was called up in May and became the first major leaguer since Johnny Mize in 1936 to begin his career with seven straight extra-base hits. He batted .274 before the All-Star break but had been scuffling lately, batting .051 (2-for-39) over his last 13 games. "Ryan Sweeney is ready to play and we feel like Carlos could use some at-bats in the minor leagues to get his swing going again playing down there," Geren said.

	Kershaw failed to make it out of the third inning on Thursday, allowing five Nationals runs in 2.1 innings. After taking the mound with a two-run lead, he promptly surrendered an rbi-single and two home runs in the bottom of the first. He walked three, struck out two and saw his season ERA rise 45 points, to 4.56.

	Wood was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, filling the roster spot left vacant by second baseman Howie Kendrick, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. The 23-year-old Wood, considered one of the most promising young hitters in the organization, batted just .125 while appearing in 22 games for the Angels earlier this year. He had one home run and two RBIs in 64 at-bats and struck out 21 times. In 103 games for Salt Lake this year, he's batting .296, with 31 homers and 84 RBIs and has struck out 104 times in 395 at-bats.

	Kendrick, one of the Los Angeles Angels' top hitters this season, went on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a strained left hamstring. Kendrick, batting .308, felt tightness in the hamstring running from first to second in the fourth inning and left Wednesday night's game against Oakland, a 6-5 loss. He had missed six weeks after injuring the same hamstring in April, but Angels manager Mike Scioscia said this injury didn't appear to be as serious. Infielder Brandon Wood was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill Kendrick's spot on the roster.

	The Nationals have shut down starting pitcher Shawn Hill for the rest of the 2008 season. While rehabbing his sore forearm, a new injury (swelling in his elbow) popped up. He's had an injury-riddled career and made just 12 starts this season, going 1-5 with a 5.83 ERA.

	The Los Angeles Dodgers designated Sturtze for assignment Thursday. The Dodgers had purchased Sturtze's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Aug. 14. The right-hander had given up one hit and no runs in 2 1-3 innings over three appearances, and did not earn a decision.

	The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated Wade from the 15-day disabled list Thursday. Wade had been on the disabled list since Aug. 9 with inflammation in his right shoulder. He is 2-1 with a 2.56 ERA in 52 2-3 innings.

	Hill is being shut down for the season after he experienced swelling in his right elbow during rehabilitation from an arm injury. Hill, on the disabled list since June 25 with a sore forearm, is going to Pensacola, Fla., to have his arm examined by Dr. James Andrews on Friday. He has been hampered by injuries throughout his career. He missed the 2005 season after having Tommy John surgery, and missed time in 2006 with soreness in his right elbow.

	The Dodgers recalled DeWitt from Triple-A Las Vegas before Wednesday's loss to Washington. DeWitt batted .257 with five homers, 35 RBIs and 31 runs scored in 88 games with the Dodgers before he was sent to the minors July 26.
