	Pujols won the 2008 National League Most Valuable Player award. Ryan Howard finished second in the voting. It's the second time the Cardinals' slugger has won the honor. Pujols hit .357 with 37 homers, 116 RBIs and 100 runs this season. He slugged .653 and posted a .462 OBP.

	The Yankees have declined Giambi's 2009 option. The team gave him $5 million and parted ways with him, which was clearly the wise decision. Had they picked up his option, they'd have had to pay him $22 million for the upcoming season.

	The Cardinals intend to cut ties with Mulder, paying a $1.5 million buyout rather than exercising an $11 million option on his contract. General manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday he sent a letter to Mulder's agent, Gregg Clifton, informing him of the franchise's intention. The Cardinals had until Nov. 15 to notify Mulder. Mulder, 31, is rehabbing from a pair of shoulder operations and was limited to 1 2-3 innings last season after initial optimistic forecasts he could join the rotation as early as May. He made $13 million the last two seasons while totaling six appearances and four starts.

	The Dodgers have declined a $5.5 million club option on Berroa, instead opting for a $500,000 buyout. Berroa, who becomes eligible for salary arbitration, earned $4.75 million this season. The 30-year-old Berroa served as the Dodgers' primary shortstop after being acquired from the Kansas City Royals on June 6 for minor league infielder Juan Rivera.

	The Baltimore Orioles released Loewen on Monday. The 24-year-old lefty was 0-2 with an 8.02 ERA in seven games for the Orioles. Loewen was placed on the disabled list on July 8 when he re-injured the stress fracture in his left elbow that ended his 2007 season. Loewen is attempting a comeback as a position player, but it apparently won't be with Baltimore.

	Ellis agreed to an $11 million, two-year contract with the Athletics on Monday. The A's also have a club option in the deal that could keep Ellis around through the 2011 season. The 31-year-old Ellis, who is coming off right shoulder surgery last month to repair chips in the cartilage as well as a torn labrum, could have become a free agent after the World Series. Ellis batted .233 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs in 117 games for the A's in 2008. He stole 14 bases and committed only four errors.

	Price earned his first career save in Tampa Bay's pennant-clinching victory over Boston in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. Price entered the game with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth. He struck the Red Sox's J.D. Drew to end the threat. After giving up a leadoff walk in the ninth, he fanned two more batters and got Jed Lowrie to hit into a fielder's choice to end the game. Price, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft, started the year in Class A, and has pitched in five regular-season games and three postseason games.

	Chamberlain is to appear in court Dec. 17 in Lincoln, Neb., for his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving. The 23-year-old pitcher was cited early Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. Lancaster County Chief Deputy Attorney Joe Kelly said Monday his office has not decided on formal charges.

	Garza shut down the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS on Sunday night, leading Tampa Bay to its first pennant and earning the series MVP award. He allowed one run and two hits over seven-plus innings in Tampa Bay's 3-1 victory in the clinching game. He went 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts in the series. Garza, the Twins' first-round draft pick in 2005 out of Fresno State, went 11-9 with a 3.70 ERA this season for Tampa Bay. His 30 starts and 184 2-3 innings were more than he pitched in his first two years combined.

	Chamberlain apologized for "an error in judgment" on Sunday after he was arrested early Saturday in Nebraska on suspicion of driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said Chamberlain was stopped for speeding on U.S. 77 south of his hometown of Lincoln. Lancaster County Attorney Gary Lacey will get paperwork on the case Monday and decide what, if any, charges will be filed, Collins said. Chamberlain, who grew up in Lincoln and starred for the University of Nebraska, was 4-3 with a 2.60 ERA in 42 appearances for the Yankees this year.

	Chamberlain has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. Deborah Collins is a spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol. She says Chamberlain was stopped for speeding on U.S. 77 near his hometown of Lincoln at about 1 a.m. on Saturday. Collins says the county attorney likely would file formal charges on Monday.

	Ortiz broke out of his 1-for-17 ALCS slump by hitting a three-run homer in the seventh inning Thursday in Boston's 8-7 win over the Rays in Game 5. Ortiz was hitless in three at-bats against Game 5 starter James Shields in Game 1. Ortiz entered the postseason 7-for-14 with two home runs and four doubles lifetime against Shields.

	Wang threw 25 pitches Friday in his first throwing session off a bullpen mound since hurting his foot in June. Wang also made 20 throws off a half-mound before the bullpen session. Wang partially tore a tendon and sprained his right foot running the bases during the Yankees' 13-0 interleague win at Houston on June 15. The right-hander was 8-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 15 starts before his season-ending injury. He won 19 games in both 2006 and 07.

	Hank Steinbrenner says Chamberlain likely will return to the New York Yankees' rotation at the beginning of the 2009 season. Chamberlain began this year in the bullpen, joined the rotation on June 3, then was sidelined after his Aug. 4 start because of rotator cuff tendinitis that caused him to go on the disabled list. When he returned Sept. 2, he went back to the bullpen. He finished 4-3 with a 2.60 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 100 1-3 innings.
