	The Cardinals claimed Manning off waivers from Washington on Wednesday. The 29-year-old Manning made his major league debut last season with the Nationals, and appeared in 57 games. He was 1-3 with a 5.14 earned run average. Left-handed hitters batted just .203 against him. The Cardinals tied for the major league lead with 31 blown saves and were near the top with 31 relief losses.

	Lowell is done for the year because of a bad hip, and is expected to undergo surgery on Monday. The MVP from last year's World Series was left off of Boston's roster for the AL championship series against Tampa Bay because of the problem. Lowell said before Game 4 of the ALCS that he wanted to have surgery soon so he could be ready for the start of spring training. Lowell was 0-for-8 in two games during the division series against the Los Angeles Angels.

	Hafner will undergo arthroscopic surgery Tuesday on the strained right shoulder that kept him on the disabled list for more than three months. Noted orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews examined Hafner in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday and will perform the surgery. Andrews will clean out the shoulder and investigate why it's causing pain, Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff said. Soloff didn't indicate how long Hafner will be out and said he would know more Tuesday about what the procedure will involve. Hafner hit .197 with five homers and 24 RBIs in 57 games last season.

	Pujols underwent surgery on his right elbow, and the team expects the 2005 NL MVP to be ready for spring training. Pujols' operation, performed by Cardinals team physician Dr. George Paletta, included decompression and transposition of the ulnar nerve. It did not require reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament. Pujols was second in the NL with a .357 average and led the Cardinals with 37 homers and 116 RBIs.

	Kuroda, a 33-year-old rookie making the second postseason start of a career that includes 11 years in the Japanese Central League, gave up five hits and two runs in the Dodgers' 7-2 win in Game 3 on Sunday night. Kuroda has been a solid third starter for the Dodgers so far in the postseason, going 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA in wins over the Cubs and Phillies.

	Moyer - the second-oldest pitcher to start a postseason game - put the Phillies in an early hole Sunday night and they never recovered. Moyer gave up three singles and a run on his first five pitches, barely resembling the 16-game winner he was during the regular season. Moyer allowed six runs and six hits in 1 1-3 innings, and struck out two in his shortest outing since July 4, 1998, when he lasted one inning for Seattle at Texas.

	Billingsley allowed eight runs and eight hits in 2 1-3 innings in the Dodgers' 8-5 loss to the Phillies in Game 2 of the NLCS on Friday. He struck out four of the first six batters he faced, but things quickly unraveled. Billingsley's outing against the Phillies was the opposite of his first postseason appearance. The right-haner held the Cubs to one run and five hits while striking out seven in 6 2-3 innings of the Dodgers' 10-3 win in Game 2 of the NLDS.

	Ramirez hit a three-run homer in the Dodgers' 8-5 loss to the Phillies in Game 2 of the NLCS on Friday. Ramirez is 8-for-18 (.444) with three home runs, seven RBIs and a .565 OBP in five postseason games. Ramirez has hit a record 27 homers in the postseason. His 71 RBIs are second only to Bernie Williams' 80.

	Victorino drove in four runs as the Phillies beat the Dodgers 8-5 Friday for a 2-0 lead in the NL championship series. Victorino, who is batting .304 (7-for-23) with a grand slam, three doubles and nine RBIs in six playoff games, was told after the game that his grandmother died Friday morning. Victorino hopes to attend the funeral in Hawaii without missing any games. No arrangements had been made yet, but Tuesday is a scheduled off day in the series.

	Myers did better at the plate than on the mound in the Phillies' 8-5 win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS. He was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and allowed five runs, six hits and four walks in five innings. "I'm not a very good hitter," said Myers, who became the first pitcher to get three hits in an NLCS game. "I just get lucky occasionally. I'm baffled by it. I would've rather pitched better."

One of those hits also came in Tampa Bay’s Game 1 victory over Chicago in the ALDS.

	Matsuzaka took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, pitching the defending World Series champions past the Rays 2-0 Friday night in the ALCS opener. He allowed four hits, four walks and struck out nine in seven innings. Matsuzaka, 18-3 overall, also got off to a shaky start, walking leadoff man Akinori Iwamura and two of the next four batters to load the bases with two outs. Opponents were hitless in 14 at-bats against the right-hander with the bases loaded during the regular season, and he got out of another jam by retiring Cliff Floyd.

Gorzelanny went 6-9 with a 6.66 ERA in 21 starts.

	The Twins will keep Redmond for another season, paying him $950,000. The 37-year-old backup catcher hit .287 in 38 games this season, with 12 RBIs. He has a .292 career average. A leader in the clubhouse, Redmond played fewer games this season. He played in 82 games in 2007, 47 in 2006 and 45 in his first year with the team in 2005. Starter Joe Mauer stayed healthy this season and logged more time behind the plate.

	Burgos will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. The 24-year-old reliever told The Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety. Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison. He disappeared after the accident but turned himself in Tuesday. Prosecutor Raul Quiroz said an investigation could lead to additional charges.

	Matsuzaka will be on the mound for the Red Sox when the AL championship series begins Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays. Matsuzaka was 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA this season, best among the Boston starters in both categories. But he also led the rotation with 94 walks, raising his pitch count and limiting him to 167 2-3 innings.

	The Cubs picked up Harden's $7 million option for next year. The Cubs acquired the hard-throwing right-hander from Oakland on July 8. He was the losing pitcher in Game 3 of the NL playoffs on Saturday night as the Cubs were swept in three games by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26-year-old Harden went a combined 10-2 with a 2.07 ERA in 25 starts for the Athletics and Cubs this season. Harden, who has battled arm problems throughout his career, was 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA in 12 starts with the Cubs.

	The Rockies have bought out Herges' 2000 option. Perhaps his 5.04 ERA had something to do with this? At 38 years old, his career may be over, but we've seen too many teams pay older relievers big money to just assume so.
