	The Brewers signed Rookie of the Year Ryan Braun to an eight-year, $45 million contract. The contract includes 2008 and a seven-year extension, meaning Braun will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2015 season, general manager Doug Melvin announced Thursday. The deal exceeds the six-year, $31 million contract signed by Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who fell short in the rookie balloting. Braun hit .324 with 34 homers and 97 RBIs last season after a May 26 callup. He has a .287 batting average with nine homers and 29 RBIs this season.

	Mark Mulder said that something is wrong if he's not in the majors by mid-July. "I would be shocked if I wasn’t back by the All-Star break," Mulder said. "I would be very disappointed if I’m not back by then. If that’s the case, then something’s not right." Mulder would have some value if he could ever come back since the Cardinals are playing so well. But until he can prove healthy, he should be left alone. - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

	Jay Bruce was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and home run for Triple-A Luisville in an 11-6 win over Scranton on Wednesday. He's hitting .667 with three homers and nine RBI over his last five games. He's hitting .611 over his last 10 games and has raised his average to a league-leading .366. The Reds better make room for the kid soon because he's simply demolishing Triple-A right now. - Cincinnati Enquirer

	John Smoltz made about 40 throws from 90 feet on flat ground on Wednesday and said he felt "very good. "The future is brighter than it was two weeks ago for me." Smoltz plans on throwing from 120 feet Thursday, then mound sessions on Saturday and Sunday. "I don't know [exactly when he'll rejoin the active roster], but each day brings more optimism, and we get closer to getting in the games," Smoltz said. "I feel better, but there's still a lot to be determined. The adrenaline of a big-league game is so much different than anything else. 	C.C. Sabathia continued his 180 turnaround, pitching a complete game shutout on Wednesday night against the Oakland A's. Sabathia allowed just 5 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 11 in the dominating performance. Sabathia has 20 strikeouts and has only given up 1 run in his last 16 innings. After a shaky start to the season, Sabathia is again establishing himself as one of the game's best pitchers. He's lowered his ERA to 5.47 and is averaging over a strikeout an inning.

	Chipper Jones was 2-for-4 with a homer, double and two runs scored in Wednesday's 8-6 win over the Phillies. Jones is now hitting .418 on the season and showing no signs of slowing down. He has 9 hits in his last four games and is contributing in every power category. How about a .489 on-base percentage and an incredible .705 slugging percentage? It's starting to get ridiculous. Let's hope just hope he can stay healthy.

	Ryan Howard was 1-for-4 with his eighth homer of the season in Wednesday night's 8-6 loss to Atlanta. Howard is still just batting .182 on the season, but at least the power is starting to come. You can't expect him to hit .300 or even .280 at this point, but if he could get his average up to at least .250 it would be a success at this point.

	Ryan Braun has reportedly agreed to a seven-year contract extension that will be a record in terms of both length and money for the Brewers and the industry. As of now the largest contract in the teams' history is the $42 million the Brewers gave free-agent pitcher Jeff Suppan for four years in 2007. Braun is being paid $455,000 this season and the Brewers are following the trends of other teams like the Rockies (Troy Tulowitzki) and the Rays (Evan Longoria). - Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

After allowing 10 earned runs in his first 7 starts, he hasn't allowed a run in his last 13 appearances and has reemerged as a No. 1 closer in all leagues.

	Edmonds agreed to a contract with the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, five days after he was released by the San Diego Padres. A career .286 hitter, the 37-year-old outfielder was batting .178 in 26 games with one homer and six RBIs with the Padres. "Hopefully Jimmy still has something left and it was just a bad start," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "The game is full of history of people that a lot of people were willing to write off and they had a change of scenery and did well again." Reed Johnson has performed well in center and Hendry said Edmonds will have to earn playing time.

	Johnson will miss the rest of the season following arthroscopic surgery Wednesday to remove scar tissue in his left shoulder. The team estimated a six-month recovery time for the 26-year-old Johnson, who has been sidelined since spring training. The team originally diagnosed the injury as tendinitis, but La Russa said he wasn't surprised by the severity. Johnson was 1-1 with a 4.03 ERA last year, his first full season in the majors. He was part of an unproven bullpen that was one of the keys to the Cardinals' World Series title in 1996.

	Johnson was sent back to Washington on Wednesday for more tests on his sore right wrist. Johnson was not in the lineup against the New York Mets and was expected to miss Thursday's series finale, as well. He strained a tendon in his wrist on a swing late in Tuesday night's game and had an MRI exam afterward. The oft-injured Johnson missed last season while recovering from a broken leg. He is batting .220 with five homers and 20 RBIs this year. He has walked 33 times, however, giving him an excellent .415 on-base percentage.

	Silva left Wednesday's start against Texas with one out in the seventh because of tightness in his lower back. Silva, who had overcome a sluggish start to retire 17 of his last 19 batters, didn't get a decision in the Mariners' 4-3, 12-inning victory. He's day-to-day.

	The Pirates purchased Raul Chavez's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday after placing starting catcher Ryan Doumit on the disabled list with a fractured left thumb. Chavez, who last played in the majors in 2006 with Baltimore, was batting .306 in the minors with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 26 games. "He's a good catcher, receives the ball nice and has a good arm," Pirates manager John Russell said. "I thought he swung the bat pretty well in spring training and it looked like he was swinging the bat pretty well in Indianapolis."

	Doumit will be sidelined at least a month after breaking his left thumb on a passed ball. Doumit was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday after an examination in Pittsburgh, confirmed the break. Surgery will not be necessary for the team's top offensive player in the early part of the season. The switch-hitter is batting .350 with five homers and 15 RBIs and had settled in the cleanup spot. Backup Ronny Paulino, the regular last year while making a career-high 119 starts, slides into the starting spot.

	The Reds called up Paul Janish to replace injured shortstop Jeff Keppinger, who was put on the 15-day DL after suffering a broken left kneecap when he fouled off a ball in Tuesday night's game. Janish has never played in the majors. Janish, a fifth-round pick in the June 2004 draft, was promoted to Triple-A for the first time last season and batted .221 in 55 games. He changed his swing a little over the winter, and was batting .293 when he was called up. "I'm a little more comfortable," Janish said. "I've had streaks when I did well in the past. Last year it just kind of snowballed on me."

	Keppinger will be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks with a broken left kneecap, leaving the Cincinnati Reds without their best clutch hitter and their most consistent hitter so far. Keppinger fouled a pitch off his knee during a 5-3 win over Florida on Tuesday. He stayed in the game for two innings, but took himself out when the pain and swelling in the knee started limiting his range. He went for a medical test on Wednesday to judge the severity of the fracture, and doctors gave the estimate for his return. The Reds called up Paul Janish from Triple-A Louisville to take his roster spot. The 25-year-old shortstop has never played in the majors.

	Castillo sat out his third straight game on Wednesday night with a strained left quadriceps and could wind up on the disabled list. Castillo worked out during batting practice and said his leg felt better, but acknowledged that if he's not ready to play by Friday or Saturday against the Yankees, he might go on the DL. Castillo said his quadriceps problem probably is related to the sore knee that's bothered him much of the year. The speedy Castillo had knee surgery in the offseason.

	Martinez threw 55 pitches Wednesday during a simulated game in Florida, the latest step in his recuperation from a hamstring injury. The New York Mets' right-hander tossed four innings against minor leaguers and fielded his position at the team's complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The club won't reveal a timetable for Martinez's return, but general manager Omar Minaya did say he hopes Martinez is weeks away, not months. "When you're dealing with hamstrings, all areas of movement are a concern," Minaya said. "Tomorrow, we'll see how he feels."

	Mora missed Wednesday's game with pain in his shoulder - the result of taking a hard grounder off the shoulder during warmups on Tuesday. "He's got soreness there," manager Dave Trembley said of Mora, who has missed consecutive games. "I don't believe it's serious. It backdates from spring training, when he dived into a base. It's kind of like a bone bruise. It's been bothering him for a while." The Orioles are off Thursday, and Trembley expects Mora back in the lineup Friday for the opener of a three-game interleague series against the Washington Nationals.
